Why won't this barcode scan?
Last updated: May 2024
There are a number of reasons that could be causing issues for your camera when scanning barcodes that might prevent the camera from recognizing the barcode or reading it correctly.
Segmented Barcodes
If you have segmented barcodes or barcodes that are partitioned and displayed separately, you will need to scan each barcode individually. If the data from those barcodes needs to be combined into one data string, such as a UDI, then that will have to happen manually after the barcodes have been scanned.
If you have trouble scanning each segment of the barcode, because perhaps the camera is picking up a different barcode or something similar, try using a sheet of paper to cover the other barcodes that you are not trying to scan, then scan the intended barcode only.
Barcodes that are Too Long
If a barcode is too long it may be difficult for a camera to scan. When a barcode is too long it can make it difficult for the camera to focus on the lens on the barcode, to view the barcode in the proper scale, and determine which part of the viewing area should be scanned. Consider using a shorter barcode or a different type of barcode like datamatrix.
